Hall of Fame Nominations for 2017

Got a Hall of Fame Nomination for 2017?

It’s that time again! We are seeking the special person(s) that belong in the Michigan Racquetball Hall of Fame. The Michigan Racquetball Hall of Fame was developed in 1984 by the Racquetball Association of Michigan (RAM) to honor those recipients who demonstrate outstanding achievement, leadership or contribution to the sport of racquetball in the State of Michigan. The award is based upon YEARS OF CONSISTENT EXCELLENCE in one of more of the following areas:

ABILITY: Through demonstration of exceptional playing skill in state, regional and/or national tournament competition.

LEADERSHIP: Through generous giving of time and talent for the advancement of racquetball in the State of Michigan by running tournaments, conducting leagues, lessons, serving on the State Racquetball Association and/or other racquetball activities.

CONTRIBUTIONS: Through generous support, including money, facilities, products, etc. for the advancement of racquetball in the State of Michigan.

The Hall of Fame is in place to recognize all forms of racquetball play in Michigan. Last year, the category of Doubles was added for consideration. The doubles team would have been expected to play together over a period of years and consistently demonstrate a high level of performance. Outdoor racquetball also deserves your attention. It is just as important as indoor racquetball when considering qualification for the Hall of Fame.

Nominees must be 35 years old, played or were involved in racquetball for at least ten years and lived in Michigan for a period of 5 years.

Pretty simple huh? I need your nominee(s) name by December 15, 2016, so I can gather the necessary credentials for review. After that, the Hall of Fame committee will make their recommendations to the voting body.

Last year’s winners, the doubles team of Daniel Verbeck and James Woolcock, and CC Melvin will be hard to top, but every year another group of deserving individuals seems to rise to star power. Seriously!

The final step in the process is the Hall of Fame and RAM player award banquet on Saturday March 25, State Singles weekend at the Davison Athletic Club. We get to hear the new Hall of Famers express their appreciation for being elected and tell a few “tall RB tales”. Last year, over 70 people attended the event. The dinner is a terrific event. The RAM board is always trying to improve the event so more players will want to attend. So, if you have any ideas, let me know!

Mark your calendar for this event next Spring.

Finally, don’t forget that I need your nominee by December 15 and it can be a deserving player, a doubles team and maybe an outdoor player or team.

See you on the hardwood,

New Father-Son Division at State Doubles

Okay you would have to admit there are a lot of famous names in Michigan racquetball: Cole, Floyd, Yellen, Jack, Larry, Goedker, Anderson, Brownlee, and some that aren’t quite famous yet.

Let’s talk about those with the same last names. Bonnett, Goudie, Bowles, Kelly, White, Hall, Frontzak, D’Almeida, Duryea, Schopieray, Miller, Lewerenz, Cole, Kutt, Goedker, Gravelyn-Covell, and probably some we left off the list.

What do these names have in common? Father and Sons. We thought it would be neat to have a father son division, no holds barred! Maybe even a round robin event.

RAM has added another division you can play as a third event, Father – Son. This sounds like a fun draw and we would like to see this call to arms be successful.
